Course Closure Procedure – Wet Weather

Closing the golf course is never a decision we take lightly. However, during periods of heavy or prolonged rain it is necessary to protect the playing surfaces and ensure the course remains in good condition for members and guests.
To keep everyone informed, here’s the process Woollahra follows when wet weather impacts play:

Overnight rain: If significant rain falls, the Course Superintendent will inspect the course early the next morning.
Morning update: Between 5.45am and 6.00am, the Superintendent will update the website with the course status.
If unplayable:

The Professional Shop will close the time sheet and remove all member and guest bookings.
A cancellation email will be sent confirming the closure.

Ongoing closures: If rain continues, the website will be updated daily to show the course remains closed.
Re-opening: After rain has cleared, the course will stay closed until it is safe and dry enough to reopen. A decision will be communicated via the website between 5.45am

Sunday Mixed Medley Competition

At the recent Match Committee meeting, it was agreed that Sunday competitions will now be played as a Mixed Medley. This means men and women will compete in the same event, with prizes allocated accordingly.
The Nearest the Pin competition will continue on hole 9/18, open to both men and women. In addition, the popular “Eagles Nest” will also be in play:

To win the Eagles Nest, your tee shot must finish within 30cm of the pin.
If it is not won on the day, the prize jackpot increases by two golf balls each competition until claimed.

We look forward to seeing plenty of friendly competition (and hopefully a few close shots at the pin!) in the weeks ahead.

Hole 9/18 Red Staked Area

The native vegetation area on the left-hand side of Hole 9/18 has been sprayed in preparation for the upcoming redesign of the hole, scheduled to commence at the end of September.
This area and the right hand side vegetation have been marked with red stakes. If your ball enters these areas from your tee shot, you may take relief with a one-shot penalty or play the ball as it lies if you find it without penalty.
Back-on-the-Line Relief (Rule 17.1d(2))

Go back on a straight line from the hole through the point where the ball last crossed the edge of the penalty area.
Drop anywhere on that line (going as far back as you like), and drop within one club-length of that spot.

Lateral Relief (Rule 17.1d(3)) – Only for Red Penalty Areas

Drop a ball within two club-lengths of where the ball last crossed the edge of the red penalty area.
The ball must not be

Senior Championship

The Senior Championship, played over two consecutive medal rounds, delivered a tightly contested battle in the handicap section — but in the gross event, it was a one-man show.
Patrick Garvan set the pace early with an opening round of 82 gross on a brisk winter day. With soggy conditions making the course tough and scoring difficult, his closest challengers, Tony Laumberg and Chris Maxwell, posted rounds of 87 and 88 respectively.
It was in the final round that Patrick truly pulled away from the field, carding an impressive 75 gross. Tony and Chris could only manage 86 and 85 in reply, leaving Patrick with a commanding 16-shot victory. This marks Patrick’s fourth Senior Championship title — and his third in a row.
The handicap event, by contrast, was far more competitive. Irving Selby led after round one with a tidy nett 70, closely followed by Ken Monkhouse, Chris Maxwell, and Lindsay Hourn,

Warren & Gibson Shield

Our Warren and Gibson teams kicked off their 2025 season on Sunday with their first match played away at Lynwood Golf and Country Club. The conditions were challenging, with strong wind gusts between 20–35 km/h making scoring difficult on the long and demanding course.
In the Warren team match, the first group of Tim Crowe and Tim Carr secured a tight 1-up win, while the second group of Garry Pepper and Nic Lagesse narrowly went down 1-down. That left Kahn Nathan and Dean Kolthek in the final group to battle it out for a result. In a hard-fought contest, they managed to hold on for a crucial half, resulting in an overall squared match against the home side.
The Gibson team wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard this week, with all three matches resulting in close losses: 4/3, 4/2, and 2/1. Despite the score lines, each match was tightly contested.
