Your child may qualify for HSC disability provisions. The provisions can assist students practically, especially when their disability might affect their exam performance. They can support students with learning, psychological or mental health, medical, physical, vision, or hearing needs. The provisions can include access to a reader or writer, extra time or rest breaks and braille papers and/or large-print papers, 

Please note that NESA determines a student’s provisions based on how their disability affects their exam performance. If you believe your child is eligible, reach out to their school. They will help you determine your child’s eligibility and provide advice on the evidence required by NESA. 

Key dates 

Year 10 students with permanent disability can apply for HSC provisions from Term 4.

For students in Years 11 and 12, applications close at the end of Term 1 in the year of their HSC exams.

The webinar will take an in-depth look at the year ahead in public education.

Parents and carers of NSW public school students are invited to attend a back-to-school webinar and question and answer session with Deputy Premier and Minister for Education and Early Learning Prue Car and NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar.

The webinar will be hosted by P&C Federation NSW President Yvonne Hilsz from 7-7.45pm on Thursday 8 February.

A key focus of the webinar is the new Plan for NSW Public Education, as well as some of the challenges schools and parents are facing.

“This is a great opportunity for parents and carers to find out what’s happening in public education in NSW in 2024,” Ms Hilsz said.

“It’s also a chance to have your questions answered by the Minister and the Secretary.”

Questions can be pre-submitted upon registering for the webinar.

Ms Hilsz said topics of discussion will include school funding reforms, inclusive learning environments, equitable outcomes, parents as partners in the learning journey, and the value of explicit instruction.

“We encourage you to promote the webinar to other parents and carers, as well as through your local school communities,” she said.

Why does attendance matter? Let’s do the maths…

Did you know that if your child misses one day a fortnight, that’s 40 days of school, 4 weeks of lessons, and over one year lost over their school life? Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can impact your child’s learning more than you think. 

Be it Mondays, Fridays, school carnivals or sporting days, every day matters when it comes to your child’s learning. Parents should reconsider going on holidays or taking casual days off during the school term.

While school is a place to learn, it’s not just about maths and science. It’s also about providing students structure, building confidence, developing good habits and creating healthy emotional bonds. It’s about the in-jokes, confiding in friends and grabbing the best handball spot on the playground.  

When your child misses school, they miss out on these key social moments. 

Need help with attendance? 

We understand that there are many reasons why a student might not attend school. It’s important to talk to your child’s school about the reason for their absence.

Schools can support families and students with attendance matters. For more attendance advice, resources and support, check out Every day matters. 

The Australian Government has introduced the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) to provide free internet access to eligible families. The SSBI provides internet access to up to 30,000 families with school-aged children who are currently unconnected. The free internet access will be provided until 31 December 2025.  

Am I eligible?

Eligible families:  

• have a child living at home enrolled in K-12 at a NSW school

• have not had an active National Broadband Network (NBN) internet service in the previous 14 days. Having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility.

• live in a premises that can access a standard NBN service

• will undergo a suitability assessment conducted by the National Referral Centre (NRC).

How can the NRC help me?  

The National Referral Centre (NRC) can help Australian families meeting the SSBI eligibility criteria connect the NBN to their homes.

The NRC is the first point of contact for families who nominate themselves for the SSBI. The NRC team will assess your family’s eligibility, including a check of your residential address and current financial situation.

If eligible, your family will be issued a voucher, which can be redeemed at any participating SSBI retail service provider. The NRC can contact your chosen SSBI internet provider and provide follow-up support.

The NRC can also answer questions and provide information regarding participating retail service providers. Centre staff can also provide follow-up support for anyone experiencing challenges redeeming the voucher.

For non-English speakers or those with accessibility challenges, the NRC provides translation services through Language Loop and their own bilingual staff. Additionally, their website features ReciteMe technology.
